- On my Powermatic, the slots on the base match the ones in the table. I can swing the table 180 degrees out of the way, and theoretically drill into something really tall if I had some fixturing to use to hold it in place.
- As said, the slots in the base are for fixtureing work. Some drill presses allow the head to be raised and lowered as a unit (radials, and some standards) allowing for easy access when drilling. More commonly, the head is at a fixed height (modern bench and floor non-radial types, older frame preses, etc) and the slots look impossile to use.
